Pink Glitter and a Great Cause

Speaking of Miss Piggy, how much would she LOVE this new style from Toms? She’d probably karate chop anybody who tried to stop her from owning them. I’ve had a pair of gold glitter Toms for years, and whenever I wear them, little girls gasp and tell me with wide eyes how much they like my shoes. One even asked, “Are those princess shoes?” to which I earnestly replied, “Yup.”

“But Jessi,” you say, “I thought you didn’t buy anything new.” That’s true for them most part, but Toms is one of the few brands for which I happily make an exception. Why? Because for every pair of Toms bought, a pair gets donated to a child in need. Toms is a super cool company with sustainable business practices (they even won the Cooper Hewitt People’s Design Award). These shoes meet all my major criteria: they’re colorful, they’re responsible, and I can run away in them. I whole-heartedly endorse Toms, and someday I’d like to go on one of their shoe drops. If you’ve got a little one in your life, check out these adorable tiny sizes!

Miss Piggy Purse: MINE!

It turns out that either I’ve always loved Muppets or I’ve always loved purses. Maybe both.

This purse, marked © Henson Associates Inc.1981, has a special story… My first experience with school of any kind was as a giraffe, that was the animal of the three-year-old class at our church preschool. The class teacher was Mrs. Glusing, and while I don’t have a whole lot of specific memories of her, I do remember that I loved and admired my very first official teacher. Fast forward 25 years… Ms. Glusing, now Ms. Godbold, is retiring and runs into my mother at church. She says she has a present for me and gives my mom this Miss Piggy purse. Apparently this purse has been in giraffe classroom all these years, and while it wasn’t actually mine (it was meant for all the children to share), she felt that I should have it. Why? Because I’d written my name on it! Looking closely, you can make out JESSICA A, my full first-name and last initial, complete with a backwards E on the back of the purse.

Pink Polka-Dot Pony

This reminds me of something Nanie (that’s my grandmother) would’ve had in her closet back in the day… the two of us share many traits, one of which is a love of polka dots. From the tag, I believe this top is actually pajamas, but I won’t tell anyone if you won’t. Somehow all of these lovely pinkish magentaish pieces were lying in wait for me at a single thrift shop in Columbus, Mississippi. And when I went to the shop down the road, the first thing I spotted was this stick horse (a.k.a. my new best friend) with coordinating pink hair. Perfection!

  • polka-dot, long-sleeve tee - $1.00, Columbus Palmer Home Thrift
  • belt - $1.00, Columbus Palmer Home Thrift
  • skirt - $3.00, Columbus Palmer Home Thrift
  • mary janes - $2.00, Columbus Palmer Home Thrift
  • stick horse - $.70, Columbus Salvation Army Thrift
  • TOTAL - $7.70 with stick horse, $7.00 without

If you’re a huge fan of the HBO series Bored To Death (set in Brooklyn!) like I am, then you’ll immediately know why I had to have this cute stick pony. For seventy cents, how could I not bring home my very own version of Janet? In case you’re not familiar, here’s a quick clip from the introduction of the “character” Janet to the show…
