Pretty Little Heads

We formed our band on Friday, wrote a song and rehearsed on Saturday, and by Sunday we were performing at the Knitting Factory. That’s the power of Ladies’ Rock Camp!

What an amazing, exhausting, exhilarating three days! I learned to play the guitar, got to hang out with fifty full-of-life women, and was consistently overwhelmed by the creativity and talent of my bandmates. The icing on the lady rock cake was that while I was on guitar, one of my best friends since eighth grade was on bass. How lucky am I to have a friend like Laura: a friend who’s willing to fly 1,300 miles to spend a weekend living out a teenage fantasy with me? Our lead singer, Courtney, and drummer, Casson, are women whose accomplishments and fearlessness make them two of my role models. The four of us together? Unstoppable. We will forevermore be Pretty Little Heads.

Here is our soon to be number one single, complete with choreography…

A huge thanks to our band coach, Meret Koehler, who just so happens to be an SVA MFA grad, for making this video for us!

In addition to writing and rehearsing an original song, each band creates its own identity in order to screenprint “merch.” I’ve volunteered to help the Girls’ Rock Campers design band identities for two summers now.

Of course, one of my favorite parts of camp is adopting a band theme and individual personas (usually established through extensive use of wigs). I give you Casson “Rosie” Rosenblatt…

Should you attend Ladies’ Rock Camp? If you’re a lady who likes to have fun, then the answer is HELL YES! Your tuition will fund scholarships so deserving girls can have the time of their lives at Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. See you there next summer?

Use Your Words
or Why We’re Not Gonna Take Shit Anymore Now That We Are Thirty And Grown-Ass Women

I went to school,
played by the rules,
worked my ass off,
and payed all my dues.
Found my fly style.
I speak hard words.
You say, “Hey baby,
No need to worry.
It’ll all come together, you’ll see.”
But the chips are all down,
the shit’s hit the fan.
You’re nowhere to be found.

Sha na na na na nah
Say what you mean
Sha na na na na nah
Say what you
Sha na na na na nah
You ain’t so keen
Your boss might buy it,
but that ain’t my scene…
Cut the crap!
Cut the crap!
Cut the crap!
Cut the crap!
Cut the crap!
Cut the crap!
CUT THE CRAP!

I give you space,
love every last flaw,
help you make sense
when your feelings are raw.
My life is full, but I
make room for you.
You say “Whatever,
It doesn’t matter.”
Or you say nothing at all.
But this is our life.
It’s all that we’ve got.
You are a coward.

Sha na na na na nah
Say what you mean
Sha na na na na nah
Say what you
Sha na na na na nah
You ain’t so keen
Your mom might buy it,
but that ain’t my scene…
Use your words.
Use your words!
Use your words!
Use your words!
Use your words!
Use your words!
USE YOUR WORDS!

Double talker
(Double talker)
You’re a double
(Double talker)
Double talker
(Double talker)
DOUBLE TALKER

Sha na na na na nah
Say what you mean
Sha na na na na nah
Say what you
Sha na na na na nah
You ain’t so keen
My ass don’t buy it,
so I’m out the scene…
I want more!
I want more!
I want more!
I want more!
I want more!
I want more!
I WANT MORE!
